About the Website
This website is supposed to be a mash of scientific content and some of my hobbies.
Professionally, I’m a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Lausanne. In my work I study the causes of human traits and try to develop ways in which we can be more efficient in identifying them.
If you’re interested in my CV, you can download a pdf of it here If you’d like to contact me, please follow me on bluesky and send me a message!
Academic work
The academic work me and my collegues are doing is focussed on finding causal relationships in humans without having to perform randomized control trials. We do this by looking at large (> 100k participant) population cohorts, searching for naturally occuring experiments that happened in human populations.
The method that we are most interested in is called Mendelian randomization, sometimes abbreviated as MR. MR uses the random segregation of alleles to identify a naturally occurring experiments. I provide a deep introduction of MR and causality in my blogpost called Introduction to observational causality
If you’re interested in my other work, you can find an updated list of the publications I’ve been involved in on my google scholar.
Lamps
When I’m not doing research into causality, I design and build lamps that are based on geometric patterns. If you’re interested in them, either their design or obtaining one, feel free to reach out, preferrably through Bluesky.
The work I’m doing is inspired by design studio’s such as studio drift and companies such as moooi.
Why is your website named athirtyone.com?
Athirtyone is an English translation of the Dutch pronounciation of my name. “A-dri-aan” could be translated into “A-3-1”, hence the name athirtyone
